Arrived in Palermo, Hotel Ai Cavalieri

 

Checking in at Best Western Ai Cavalieri Hotel Via Sant'Oliva 8 in Palermo.  We arrived to early to be able to check into our room, so we left out luggage with them at the front desk and heading out to explore and find a spot for lunch.

We found a lovely spot.  I had my first Aperol Spritz of the trip and Ernie had a beer with our lunch.  Tasted as good as it looks!

We had a large basket of wonderful bread, and also ordered Burrata which we shouldn't have, as we couldn't eat everything.

Having a English menu is helpful.  

After our lunch, and exploring the area we made it back to check into our rooms for a bit of a rest.  A desk area with small fridge in the left cabinet area, amour where we hung a few things up; as we were going to be here 3 nights.  Two nights with the tour, plus our pre-night.

Reviewed the map of the area in our sitting area which is on the other side of the little separation wall you see in pictures above.

The breakfast room with a small meeting room off to the right where we had our meet the guide and tour group meeting the next night.  Sadly though this area was quite pretty, they only did breakfast, no bar area or dinner area in the hotel.

Another common area where people could gather, though we never saw anyone use this space while we were there.

After setting in, and taking our nap; we headed out for the evening.  We wanted just light bite and found Basquiat Cafe'.  Just a short distance from our hotel.  If you follow the link, you'll see the inside of the restaurant, but after winding through several rooms, they took us to a lovely outside courtyard for dinner.  We liked it so much we ended up eating there twice during our Palermo stay.

Before dinner, we walked around and enjoyed the area all lite up at night.

Tomorrow we could tour some more on our own and meet up with our group at 6 pm in the hotel lobby.

Happily married for lots of years to great guy, mother of one wonderful daughter. I have lots of interests and wished I had more time to explore them all.

  Collette calls this a 14 day tour, but it's really 12 as they count your travel days It's listed as a level 3 of 4 for activity which they describe as  "You're an on the go traveler."  You don't want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of times (1-2 hours) isn't a big deal.  You can navigate hills and uneven ground, climb into various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc) and could possibly anticipate changes in elevation.  You can expect some longer days balanced with free-time to recharge or set out on your own adventure.   ***I think they missed the mark with this description of this tour.  They didn't mention walking uphill to hotels that are too step for even a small van. Day 2, Continued, Afternoon at Monreale Cathedral

  Afternoon, still day 1 of our tour.  Our itinerary reads: This afternoon head to Monreale Cathedral, ascending on foot to see its majestic Byzantine mosaics.  Then, it's our choice!  Explore the cathedral's cloisters, taking in their serene atmosphere of the monastic complex - OR - ascend the southern tower to the panoramic terraces for a bird's -eye view over Palermo. Once we were done with the guided tour, we could explore on our own.  This cathedral is considered to be the best example of Norman Architecture.  The building began in 1174 by William II of Sicily. It was elevated to the Archdiocese of Monreale in 1183, and completed in 1267.  Since 2015 it's been part of the Arab-Norman Palermo and the Catholic churches of Cefalu' and Monreale UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 2, Palermo, The Markets, Sept 26-2024

  Day 2 of the tour, Breakfast started at 7 am and we were to meet at 9:30 in the lobby to begin our walking tour: Our itinerary reads: Begin your adventure tasting your way through Palermo's lively markets on a walking tour unveiling the city's historical center and introducing you to traditional  Sicilian street food, which layers Oriental and Norman influences with local produce such as wild fennel, olives, and spices.  Our group of 24 was divided into 2 groups, one group of 12 and one of 10.  A couple of people opted out.  The 2nd group was lead by Francesca above, who was very cute and animated.  She was full of information and shared with us her childhood memories of the area, the food and the vendors.  Group 2 was a bit delayed departing due to some technical issues with Vbox.  Standing with Angelica is Vera and Joe from Australia.  Visiting Sicily was especially important to them as they both have family in Sicily.
